While the world stays transfixed on the actions and announcements from within the confines of the “big three,” Umbro is continuing to make solid moves to continue to show their intent of returning to the upper echelons of football. After the Velocita made a big splash, and while the brand’s other silos continue to make positive colorway moves, Umbro has announced that they have become the official clothings supplier for PSV Eindhoven. With Umbro seeming to have been “stripped for parts” from Nike only recently, it will certainly feel good for the double diamond to snag a team that has been contracted by Nike since 1995.
PSV still carries some serious weight in the world game, and their constant involvement in Europe’s elite competitions will always provide serious press for Umbro. With the second most league titles behind Ajax, PSV has some serious history...and a simple glance at the table shows that PSV is standing head and shoulders above the rest of their competitors as the season begins to near the home stretch.
Umbro will certainly fully embrace having a club in the Champions League if PSV can maintain their pace through the end of the season...rubbing shoulders with the best in the world will be great for Umbro and PSV. The best part of the Umbro/PSV event for PSV fans may have been the good looking training shirt that was on show during the contract signing. For some, there might have actually been hope that this was going to be one of the actual kits.
In a way, the two parties share a very similar story. A fantastically rich history that involves them being one of the more dominant forces during large chunks of football lore. However, a slightly more troubled last few years and a hope that better things are on the horizon (for PSV, on the very near horizon). Perhaps we will see club and brand alike making the jump back to an area where PSV’s fans and Umbro’s boardroom believe they belong.
What do you think? Is this a good move by Umbro? A good move for PSV? Who is the bigger winner out of all of this?
