With the launch of the PUMA evoPOWER we're taking a look back at some of our favourite versions of the model it replaced, the PowerCat 1.12. Over two years at the top the PowerCat 1.12 was worn by some of the world's best players in Champions League finals, European finals and World Cup finals.
Before we retire the PowerCat to football boot heaven we've picked out five of our favourite colourways to flick through one last time. PUMA launched the PowerCat 1.2 back in October 2011 taking over from the previous 1.10 model but with a fresh new toy on the block in the shape of the evoPOWER the PowerCat bows out and takes a place in the archives.
Kicking off our list is the red/white/limoges PowerCat 1.12. Launched in May 2012 in both standard and SL editions, this colourway was worn by PUMA athletes throughout EURO 2012. Marco Reus, Gianluigi Buffon and Cesc Fabregas all wore the boot in Poland and Ukraine as Spain lifted the trophy.
The white/orange/ocean combo landed in February of last year, a clean looking, predominantly white boot with splashes of orange and blue on the 3D Duo shooting tech and Cat. Once again the standard issues were joined by a super light version and were worn by PUMA's top players across Europe.
The 2013 Champions League final was the perfect stage for PUMA to drop a new colourway into the mix. The black/yellow/white/blue release was PUMA's 11th PowerCat 1.12 colour update and more of a traditional take for the silo. Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus slipped into a pair for the all German clash with Bayern Munich at Wembley.
The most eccentric design to appear on the PowerCat 1.12 series was the "Dia del Futbol" graphic. PUMA have a reputation for delivering crazy designs at that was extended to the PowerCat with this special edition release. The odd boots, in more ways than one, drew visual inspiration from the Mexican 'Day of the Dead' holiday and featured a skull design on the tongue and a skeletal pattern on the sole plate.
September 2013 saw the release of another top PowerCat 1.12 colourway. The orange/blackberry/white paint job was one of the brighter designs to adorn the PowerCat's upper and was worn for the first time by Cesc Fabregas in Barcelona's Champions League group opener against Ajax. The last ever PowerCat colourway and for that reason alone deserves a place in our top 5.
