PUMA have released a new training video series helping footballers across the country get ready for pre-season with a selection of 'Nature of Performance' training tutorials from Premier League stars Michael Carrick, Adam Lallana and Steven Caulker.
This week the first three were launched, with another video being released every week for the next four weeks on PUMA's YouTube channel. The first three videos see Michael Carrick explain the Nature of the Midfield Engine Room, Adam Lallana the Nature of Running Into Space, and Steven Caulker the Nature of Defending the Danger Area.
Carrick talks us through a number of drills when receiving the ball at different angles and how your instinctive decision making is key to creating space. Underlining the importance of vision Carrick said “I've got to be aware of where the defender is and where the space is around me so I need to be looking all the time and getting myself into position”.
The United midfielder explains how those split second decisions can go along way to opening up the play “Once I've done my movement to move the defender and create the space I've got to be thinking about what I'm going to be doing with the ball, whether I take two touches, one touch, where the defender is and where my team mate is, you need to have a picture in your head to make a decision.”
Southampton and England U21 striker Adam Lallana gives a demonstration on creating a vital couple of extra yards when receiving the ball with your back to goal. Lallana pushes away the defender before making his run to buy himself more time and space to open up and plan his attack on goal.
Tottenham's big centre half Steven Caulker explains the 'nature of defending the danger zone'. Caulker talks about communication with your fellow centre back, forcing the striker out wide and away from goal and how to perfectly time the block. Caulker's technical approach is to determine one simple outcome “Our aim is to protect the goal at all costs.”
