Leo Messi wastes no time in getting his next Ballon d'Or assault underway and the new year brings out the creativity in players worldwide as custom colourways are the order of the week. Kicking off the week in standard fashion, here's what caught our eye in the past seven days of football...

Connor Jennings (Wrexham) Nike Vapor IX / adidas ACE

We've seen players mix up colourways to nail the odd boot design but Connor Jennings took things to the next level this weekend by lacing in his left foot up in the adidas ACE 16.1 and his right in the Nike Mercurial Vapor IX as Wrexham were knocked out of the FA Trophy by Torquay United. Why would he do this? We have absolutely no idea.

Francesco Totti (Roma) Nike Tiempo Legend 6

Francesco Totti moved into his 25th year as a Roma player wearing another modified edition of the Nike Tiempo series. The legendary Italian striker has continued his trend of adding a fold-over elasticated tongue to the Tiempo with the sixth-generation featuring his now trademark customisation.

Daniele De Rossi (Roma) adidas ACE 16.1

Another Roma veteran to switch into new footwear this week was Daniele De Rossi. Rather than sticking to what he knows, De Rossi went all experimental to prove that he's down with the kids by training in the currently unreleased and next-generation adidas ACE silo - a laced version of the new ACE 16+ Purecontrol boot.

Emre Can (Liverpool) Nike Mercurial Superfly IV

After Emre Can's deal with adidas expired last month we saw the Liverpool midfielder slide into a blackout edition of the Mercurial Superfly IV boot and it looks like he may now have agreed terms with the Swoosh. Can was in action wearing the most recent "Urban Lilac" edition of the boot, part of the new 'Liquid Chrome' Pack.

Eli Babalj (Adelaide United) Nike Premier

The Nike Premier has received plaudits for its sleek design and simplicity since it hit the market in May 2013. The silo saw Nike rummaging through their Tiempo archives in November to pick out inspiration for a limited run of colour-ups, including this "White/Red" drop worn by Eli Babalj and inspired by the 2008 "Metallic White/Team Red" Air Legend II.

Nathan Junior (Tondela) adidas Crazylight

October 2014 saw the second installment of adidas adizero Crazylight in the form of the "Neon Green/Black/Neon Orange" colourway worn this week by Nathan Junior. Launched as part of the Crazylight Pack' the adizero was the world's lightest ever football boot at the time of release, tipping the scales at just 135g.

Chancel Mbemba (Newcastle United) Puma evoPOWER 1.3

PUMA's next generation evoPOWER burst onto the scene this week with a new design and a bold launch colourway. Tweaked with a sleeker profile and extra technology to generate maximum shooting power the 1.3 was worn by a number of Premier League players including Olivier Giroud, Yaya Toure, Cesc Fabregas and Newcastle's Chancel Mbemba.

Lionel Messi (Barcelona) adidas Messi15 Platinum

Onto the next one. After being presented with his fifth Ballon d'Or before kick off at the Camp Nou, it took Leo Messi just 7 minutes to score in his adidas Messi 15 Platinum boots against Athletic Bilbao. Just one pair have been created and finished with platinum elements, never seen before on a football boot - the colour of perfection. Clean.

Wataru Endo (Japan) Nike Tiempo Legend 6

The AFC U23 Championship has kicked off with Wataru Endo becoming the early front-runner for best custom boot design on show. The Japanese international has opted for a blue and yellow combination to give a unique look to his Nike Tiempo Legend 6 boots.

Antonio Cassano (Sampdoria) Mizuno Morelia Runbird

Has Antonio Cassano signed for Mizuno? The Sampdoria striker has recently appeared in a blacked-out edition of Morelia Runbird boot, which sports the famous Runbird logo. A limited edition release to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Morelia with a design that is a nod to the original in 1985.

Jamie Vardy (Leicester City) Nike Hypervenom II

Jamie Vardy looks to have re-signed a new deal with Nike after a brief period wearing a blacked-out edition of the Hypervenom Phantom II boot. Lacing up the latest 'Liquid Chrome' Hypervenom against Aston Villa, Vardy's new deal is a valuable one for Nike as they'll be hoping his fine run of form continues into England's Euro 2016 campaign.

Joe Worrall (Dag & Red) Nike Magista Opus

Dagenham and Redbridge defender Joe Worrall took customisation into his own hands this week as he coloured in the bright launch edition of the Nike Magista Opus to create a predominately black version of the boot. Goes kind of nicely with the yellow details and red Swooshes doesn't it? Top effort.

Yulian Anchico (Santa Fe) adidas Crazylight

More Crazylight action from Colombia this time as Yulian Anchico went one better than Nathan Junior by wearing the original adidas adizero F50 Crazylight originally launched in March 2014, released in limited quantities and worn exclusively by Gareth Bale. The debut Crazylight weighed just 135g, a world record at the time which has since been smashed by the adidas 99g boot.

Adrianinho (Laverdale) Nike Hypervenom II

Have to admit this one has stumped us a little. The upper of Adrianinho's Nike boots points towards an edition of the Hypervenom with the instep Swooshes and visible Flywire on the outstep but the sole-plate is modified to what we're used to seeing on the standard edition. Once that peculiar white/black design is thrown into the mix we're left scratching our heads. Anyone?

Kevin-Prince Boateng (AC Milan) Nike Mercurial Superfly IV

Kevin-Prince Boateng threw together his take on the Nike Mercruial Superfly IV by using a red upper matched with yellow Swooshes and some pink laces for good measure. A jumbled look but one that doesn't look too out of place as the black Dynamic Fit Collar flows smoothly into the AC Milan socks. Not a bad effort Kev.
