Club chiefs at Real Madrid have confirmed the Bernabéu stadium will undergo a major revamp as club president Florentino Pérez begins his plans to make it the "best stadium in the world". Presented today in the Spanish capital, models of the project show what the club's stadium will look like come 2017.
An estimated €400m (£328m) will be spent on the stadium's new exterior that will include a retractable roof. Volkwin Marg, owner of GMP, the company that will lead the construction, said; "We aim to transform the Bernabeu into the most advanced and developed stadium of the 21st century."
The news comes just weeks after rivals Barcelona announced plans to remodel the Camp Nou and extend the stadium's capacity from 98,000 to 105,000. Barca fans will be waiting a little though, with the four year renovation not expected to start until 2017.
Work in Madrid will begin this summer and take a further three years to complete. Speaking at the unveiling of the plans, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said; "It's time to face another challenge has come, we want to make the Santiago Bernabeu is the best stadium in the world."
"Our commitment is to continue increasing the heritage of our club, thus gain in economic strength, so we can continue to lead in an environment of increasing competition. We believe in a project that will enhance our image, brand and city that we also feel proud of."
