Another weekend, another clash of the titans, another wonder goal scored. Football is better than ever and some special players are emerging. At both of ends of the table in the Premier League it looks like going right down to the wire.
These are also worrying times for other sides, and the La Liga title race is looking like it could well be a three horse race – unlike in Germany, where it is all done and dusted. With that in mind, we have taken a look at ten things we have learnt from this weekend.
Want a wonder goal? Turn to Pogba – The former Manchester United star scored yet another superb goal for Juventus this weekend as the Serie A leaders extended their points difference at the top of the table. Pogba is a wanted man with his stock is rising higher each week. A return to Manchester United seems unrealistic, but if the Frenchman continues in this form we could see a big-money move arrive from elsewhere for his signature in the summer.
Manchester City are on fire - The club look scary at times, it actually looks like they can score at will. With their league form all but guaranteed for now, all attentions will soon turn to the clash against Barcelona where they cannot afford any slip ups – mathematical or otherwise.
Arsenal keep on course, but February is coming – They are setting the pace at the top of the table and will be there or there about come May, but the fixture list for Arsenal reads like the run-in from hell. They have Bayern Munich in Europe and all of the top seven in the next few weeks. Can they keep up the pace after that? If they can, the title could be heading to the Emirates.
Chelsea are moving into top gear – It is 100 wins in 142 Premier League games for Jose Mourinho at Chelsea now, and his side are coming good. They looked shaky in the first half of the season, but are getting better and better. If this is what he can do in six months, what about six years? Mourinho wants this job for life and if he delivers the goods even Abramovich would struggle to find a reason to pull the trigger.
For Manchester United, when it rains it pours – A heavy defeat at Stamford Bridge and now the loss of their skipper. Yes, a yellow may have been more than sufficient for the tackle Nemanja Vidic performed on Eden Hazard, but the fact remains, it was late and dubious. Now they will have to cope without him against Sunderland and that is a game Moyes cannot afford to lose.
Can Real Madrid come from behind in La Liga? – Carlo Ancelotti's men were the big winners of the weekend as the La Liga title race took an interesting twist with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid both dropping points. After demolishing Real Betis 5-0 on Saturday, Madrid are now just a point off the top two after Barca were held 1-1 at Levante and Atletico could only manage the same scoreline against Sevilla.
Eto’o is still a big game player – The win against Manchester United will be talked about by Chelsea fans incessantly, but they cannot forget the part Eto’o played. He grabbed a goal against Liverpool and now has three against United. A big game player? It seems so, but until he scores the winner against the likes of Stoke et al, the Bridge faithful will still want another forward brought in.
Do we need video technology? – We can point to a decision in each of the Premier League games this weekend, but the dubious sending off at Stamford Bridge, not to mention the absolute red from Rafael which went down as a yellow, shows yet again that decisions are not as good as they should be. Human errors occur but if we can change or help this, why shouldn't we?
It is tight at the bottom – We are all talking about the top of the table and how tight the title race and the fight for the top four will be, but we often forget to mention the fight at the bottom. The table is so tight and literally five points separate Hull in 11th and Cardiff who are rock bottom. It will go down to the wire, and anyone could be sucked in.
Sherwood has Spurs firing – They don’t even need the wonder that is ‘Soldado pen’ anymore. Since the departure of AVB, the club have looked happier, better and even the beanie hat lover, Adebayor has been welcomed back into the fold. The title will not happen, and if we are being honest, Spurs would be lucky to get top four. Keep on in this vein however and they might well do so.
