When it comes to boot battles, Nike and adidas' fight for supremacy is usually contested between their two speed silos. In recent months though there's been a renewed rivalry between the classics. The Nike Premier, adidas Copa Mundial, Tiempo Legend and adiPURE top the heritage bill, but which brand can lay claim to today's classic crown - Nike or adidas?
This question of course arrives on the back of adidas releasing a white Copa Mundial - a decision that's been embraced by some and questioned by others. The recent arrival of the Nike Premier has added extra spice to the classic contest. Now the sleeping giant has made it's first real move in over 30 years. So what else can we expect?
The adidas Copa Mundial has been one of the brands only never-changing model since its introduction in 1982. Fast forward 31 years and adidas are beginning to take another look at their classic Copa. Flipping the colourway to white could be a masterstroke by adidas - although they're only a limited run at the moment - but as some of you have already suggested, further Copa updates could be around the corner.
The Nike Premier was launched to combat the Copa's dominance as one of the only true heritage boot on the market. A no-nonsense boot delivering nothing but pure, old-school performance and style, the Nike Premier has been a big hit, most notably with referees - although we're sure Nike wouldn't want it labelled as a 'referee boot'.
Sitting alongisde the Copa Mundial and Premier are the brands modern classics - the adidas adiPURE 11Pro and Nike Tiempo Legend IV. Both boot models are nearing their sell-by date, with a new 11Pro and Tiempo Legend V scheduled for release later this season. Player-wise, both boots have strong rosters headlined by Gerrard Pique, Andrea Pirlo, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Michu and Phillip Lahm.
Now that both adidas and Nike camps have their 'true classics' covered, will we see more changes and experimentation from their modern heritage boots? Whatever happens, we're loving that the spotlight is back on classic football boots for now.
