A Closer Look at the Nike Hypervenom Phantom 3 : Football Boots : Soccer Bible

The low-cut Nike Hypervenom Phantom III is Nike’s first low-cut Flyknit football boot. A big claim that’s gone somewhat undiscussed since its launch in Munich. Let us repeat that ― Nike’s first ever low-cut Flyknit football boot. That makes them a big deal.

The Hypervenom needed a big update and that’s exactly what Nike have delivered. While the Hypervenom Phantom III DF (that’s what Nike are calling their collared Hypervenom now ― short for ‘Dynamic Fit’), remains the line’s statement boot, the Hypervenom Phantom III (notice it now comes with the top-tier associated ‘Phantom’ label, replacing the ‘Phinish’ title previously given to the boot) gives you everything Nike have to offer from a low-cut boot. With the demand for low cut boots still high amongst amateurs and professionals ― Harry Kane, Gonzalo Higuain and Nike’s newest Hypervenom recruit, Marcus Rashford, to name a few ― it’s a boot that’s going to appeal to many.

The boot comprises of everything you get from the Hypervenom Phantom III DF, minus the Dynamic Fit Collar. The boot boasts a one-piece Flyknit constructed upper, which integrates areas of high breathability, stretch and support, while the tongueless design virtually eliminates any seams. The strike zone features multi-layered Poron foam pods integrated into a Flyknit upper. The pods are rate dependent, creating a dampening soft touch at low velocity contact, but activating rigidity when striking the ball with high velocity to create a firm launching pad for a true strike. Flywire cables enable the player to fine-tune the fit at each loop for a more precise lock-in to support lateral cuts. 

Following the success of the original Hypervenom Phantom launched in 2013, the second generation Hypervenom struggled to live up to its predecessor, with Nike famously reverting back to the original honeycomb-like NikeSkin upper system. Looking to re-establish its position in the game, Nike are back with a vengeance and a Hypervenom that’s out to set a new standard in fit and feel.
