Originally designed before the Air Max 1, the Zero pathed the way for the first ever shoe for the collection. Tinker Hatfield, the Air Max creator had sketched a shoe so advanced that it couldn't be produced at the time, the technology and materials available weren't advanced enough to execute the original vision, so the Air Max 1 was born instead.
Hatfield designed the upper in his sketches to be comfortable and form-fitting, with a tipless vamp, an idea borrowed from the 1985 Nike Sock Racer. The sketch also featured an external heel strap that lacked a heel counter, a design concept that remained unseen until the Nike Air Huarache release in 1991.
Over 29 years on and those sketches have been re-visited to create the Air Max Zero, with the addition of the latest Nike innovations. Technologies such as the newly-introduced Air Max 1 Ultra outsole seen on the Air Max 1 Ultra Moire have been introduced as Hatfield’s original concept is realised and "the one before the 1" is ready to take it's first steps.
The Air Max Zero will be available for pre-order from March 22 for a launch on Air Max Day (March 26).
