Football boots are entering new realms of design possibilities. Denis Dekovic, Design Director for Nike Football, is the man driving Nike's creative engine, pushing the boundaries of football footwear design with incredible innovations. We recently sat down with Nike's chief boot designer to discuss his latest project, the Magista Obra.
Dekovic has been with the brand since 2005 and involved in Nike Football since 2010. The road to Magista has been a long one for Nike and Dekovic, who has led the charge towards the brand's most ground-breaking boot yet. From hours of inspiration research to playing Playstation with the players, Dekovic works as closely as possible with Nike's athletes to ensure he understands their needs before he goes about delivering them.
Denis took us through the complete design process of the revolutionary Magista going into great depth on each of the boot's technologies. If there's one man who knows the ins and out of boot innovation and Nike then it's Denis Dekovic.
Quick to share the plaudits Dekovic touches on the size of the team involved to create the Magista "The design team is ten people, we have material design, colour design, graphic design, 3D design, footwear designers. In Nike HQ we have around 80 people but we also have fantastic teams in Italy and Asia and in the Nike Research Lab, it's a huge number of people who have touched this project."
Magista, at present, will be worn by 20 professional players, including Andres Iniesta and Mario Gotze but the total number of players who tested the boot to provide feedback was 140. Dekovic explains that number is a broad range "We tested in Italy, Spain, England, Brazil, Germany, we tested everywhere, at all levels and at all conditions."
