Launched as part of Nike's Summer 2014 collection Nike have once again turned back the clock on the Mercurial's distinguished history, this time celebrating the 2006 Mercurial Vapor, debuted by Ronaldo at the World Cup and featuring the first carbon fiber heel-counter and a new high-visibility colour.
During the 2006 World Cup Ronaldo became just the 20th player ever to score in three different FIFA World Cups and equalled, and then beat, the all-time World Cup finals scoring record of 14, held by Gerd Müller. He also became only the second player ever, after Jürgen Klinsmann, to score at least three goals in each of three World Cups.
As with the 1998 and 2002 Mercurial re-releases, the 2014 Mercurial Vapor IX Fast Forward ’06 provides today's players with all the modern boot technology expected from the Nike Mercurial Vapor IX but with visual elements inspired by the 2006 classic. Unlike the '02 edition however these will be worn on pitch by Nike's contracted players until the end of the 2013/14 season.
Subtle graphic references and colors combine with modern materials and innovation to celebrate the boot’s legacy of speed while commemorating an iconic summer for Ronaldo and the Mercurial. A small heel logo mark identifies the original year of inspiration, and the sockliner tells the story of key moments in the Mercurial’s history.
The 2014 Mercurial Vapor IX Fast Forward ’06 launches as part of the Nike Summer 2014 collection that sees new colourways dropped acroos all four silo's. The CTR360 Maestri III is be offered in a striking crimson; the Tiempo V in a shade of crimson with white; and the HyperVenom in vibrant yellow.
The Nike 2014 Mercurial Vapor IX Fast Forward ’06 Edition will be available from selected online retailers including Pro-Direct Soccer. What are your thoughts? Let us know. Join the conversation online, on Twitter and on Facebook.
