Nike chiefs including the brand's global team of designers made the journey from Portland Oregon to Barcelona last week to unveil the ground-breaking Magista. Hosted in what's become Nike's European hub for such events, media from all four corners of the world took over the city to witness a 'game-changing' football innovation.
Kicking the show off was the man elected to front Nike's new breed of football boots, Andrés Iniesta. Barcelona's creative midfielder has been at the center of the Magista's development and as the curtains lifted he became the first player to present the breakthrough boots to the world.
Hailed as football revolution, Nike claim the Magista will change the way football boots are made, perform and look forever. "We've revolutionized football boots before and now we've done it again." The words of Phil McCartney, VP of Nike Football Footwear who took to the stage alongside Nike CEO and President Mark Parker.
Mark Parker, the driving force behind Nike's new-age innovations, introduced the Magista as a "a radical new silhouette" and a "prime example of what Nike does best." Nike's creative CEO usually keeps his media appearances Stateside, but not this time. Parker, who got his start at Nike in 1979 working as a footwear designer, took the stage in Barcelona like the Steve Jobs of sportswear, all the while resisting every urge to call the Magista a soccer cleat.
"We're not afraid to break the mold, we get out in front and we set new standards of high performance footwear and that's exactly what Magista does. It redefines what football boots are and what football boots can become."
"The game is entering a new era, human potential and design innovation are accelerating together at an unprecedented rate so we've created a boot that delivers the ultimate in fit, touch and traction. When the world's greatest footballers play in these boots, the game of football will never be the same."
Phil McCartney followed Parker's introduction, giving a more detailed account of the Magista's attributes. "We didn't set out to create a hi-top football boot, but players told us they wanted no distraction in the interaction between the foot, the lower leg and the boot. The dynamic fit collar is the new standard of high performance in this area."
Nike's creative engine is in full swing as we approach the World Cup and with further innovations around the corner, Nike are setting the pace for rapid change and evolution. They could have stuck the Swoosh on a standard silhouette with no questions asked, but as Phil McCartney told us, "that would be too easy".
