We caught up with Chelsea and England left back Ashley Cole at an exclusive Nike Tiempo event in London to talk about how he's getting on with his new Tiempo Legend V boots, his relationship with the brand and how he rates England's chances in Brazil this Summer.
Cole has been with Nike since 2009, when he started wearing the first generation CTR360 Maestri boots. Since then he's established himself as one of Nike's lead Tiempo players and arguably England's greatest left back of all time and the Chelsea defender insists there's still a lot left in the tank.
Speaking about the Nike Tiempo Legend V boots Ash told us "They're a great boot, I've always enjoyed wearing Nike boots. Since they've changed the leather, they've made them a little bit tighter, you don't think they can get any more comfortable than the last boots but now these Tiempos are even more comfortable."
Cole, 33, is still looking forward rather than back and this was echoed in Nike's recent Tiempo commercial where he demands "I'm not done". Speaking of the ad Cole told us "When Nike do this kind of thing they always do big adverts and it was a privilege to be involved in. I got a bit of stick from a few of the players but it was something that I enjoyed doing, it was a great campaign."
Continuing to underline his desire to keep playing for the Three Lions Ash explained "As a player you never want to stop, I'm still loving football and I want to carry on until my manager tells me my time's up. I'm never going to give up, I'm going to keep going, I'm proud to wear the England shirt and I'm never going to put that down until I'm told."
Discussing whether he now takes on a more experienced role in the England squad Cole told us "I still mix it up with the younger lads, I know a few of them through Chelsea and the Under 21's. We have a good young squad, everyone's together, everyone enjoys the same things. I'm 33 but I still enjoy playing table tennis and computer games like the 19 year olds!"
Obviously we had to ask him if we can repeat the 1966 heroics... "It's not worth going if players don't believe we can win the World Cup. I get that question everyday, of course we're going to say yes, we're confident in our ability and the squad we've got. If there's one chance and one team, I think it's this team." Well said, come on England.
With the Swoosh having a reputation for big tournament boot collections the England left back wasn’t giving too much away about what Nike have up their sleeves "There are going to be some exciting boots for the World Cup, as a player you always want to wear different colours and different styles of boots and for me Nike are number one at innovating new boots."
