Last week Nike hosted an underground event in London to celebrate the launch of the new Brasil World Cup kit. Chelsea defender and Brasilian international David Luiz joined Nike Creative Director Martin Lotti in speaking to us about the jersey and the 2014 World Cup.
When considering the design of the jersey, Lotti explained that the focus was on two key elements. "It's all about the yellow and it's all about the crest. It's very easy to over design a jersey and in this case it's almost like designing a national flag. Our goal was to respect this and elevate the most important elements which is the yellow and the crest."
Don't be fooled by the minimalist design. Under the hood the jersey is packed with some of Nike Football's latest performance innovations. "From a distance it's very simple, clean and modern, and as you get close you discover more and more details - performance details like the laser venting on the side or the performance mesh in the back. Or the more soulful details like the Bruno Big elements in the back neck."
Alongside international team mates Neymar, Silva, Bernard & Paulinho, David Luiz is one of the athletes featured in Nike's recently released 'Dare To Be Brasilian' video. For Luiz, working with Nike in the build up to a World Cup in his home nation is proving to be a lot of fun. "Nike is a top, top sponsor and are always trying to surprise us."
A World Cup in Brasil is a dream situation for Nike, who have been waiting for the tournament to reach the Samba nation since signing the national team in 1996. "The culmination to this event will be truly and epic moment for the brand. We literally have been waiting for twenty years, ever since we signed the Brazilian team. To have the World Cup in Brasil, it truly doesn't get much better than that."
The new Nike Brasil jersey is available to order now from selected online retailers including Pro-Direct Soccer. Let us know what you think. Join the conversation online, on Twitter and on Facebook.
