Ahead of the new 2014 MLS season, which kicks off this weekend, adidas have revealed all 19 participating clubs home jerseys. Unlike other leagues where clubs can pick and choose their kit suppliers, Major League Soccer has a deal with adidas where the brand are the official supplier to all of their teams.
The deal between adidas and the MLS was extended in 2010 and currently runs to 2018 and is worth an estimated $25 million a year, making it one of adidas' largest investments in the sport worldwide. The deal includes adidas supply apparel to all MLS youth academies as well as providing the league's official match ball.
Do we like the idea of every team in the league wearing the same branded kit? To be honest, not really, but this does force adidas to design more creative shirts so clubs have a more unique identity rather than use the same templates, like in the Premier League.
The American flag features on the left sleeve of each jersey (apart from Jermain Defoe's Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, who are of course Canadian) below the famous three stripes. The Chicago Fire and Real Salt Lake kits are the pick of the bunch for us, closely followed by four time MLS Cup winners LA Galaxy. We're not too sure on Colorado Rapids crop circle-esque state flag affair.
Current MLS Cup holders Sporting Kansas City kick off their campaign with a trip to Seattle Sounders whilst last season's runners up Real Salt Lake take on the Galaxy in Los Angeles. Attendances were up overall throughout the MLS last season as soccer continues to grow in the States. Seattle Sounders averaged a home gate of just over 44,000, which was more than Chelsea, Everton and Tottenham.
LA Galaxy are tipped as the favourites to win the 2014 MLS Cup just ahead of Sporting Kansas City and Thierry Henry's New York Red Bulls. The MLS season will be rudely interrupted by the World Cup in June with Clint Dempsey the key player to miss the league games. American soccer is continuing to show signs of growth and this can be seen by the amount of Americans who are performing well in the European leagues, 18 of the last 20 man roster all ply their trade in Europe's top leagues.
Each MLS club will get the chance to kit up in their new adidas jerseys this month in front of their home supporters as the competitive action gets back underway after a long off season. What do you think of the the whole league wearing the same brand and which club have been sorted out with the best kit? Let us know.
