Luis Suarez surprised a few people on New Year's Day by leaving his F50's in the Anfield changing rooms and lacing up in the adidas Nitrocharge. In the form of his life, scoring goals for fun, it seemed like an odd time to change his boot silo, so what was the reason?
Let's be honest, with the form Suarez is in he'd still be banging in goals wearing a pair of wellies at the moment, but nevertheless it did appear odd that he would make any change to his footwear, especially when you consider that in form players such as Robin van Persie hang onto their 'lucky' boots when the goals are flowing.
So why the change? According to Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers' post match interview Suarez was carrying a foot injury, Rodgers told the Daily Star “Luis had a really bad knock on the top of his foot from our last game against Chelsea and nine out of 10 players would not have played. He had a big strapping on it and put himself out there for the team and that is why he gets the goals he does because he is so determined.”
Mystery solved we reckon. The Nitrocharge certainly offers more protection than the lightweight F50 and if Suarez's foot was heavily strapped then the F50's close to the foot fit may have been uncomfortable for the Liverpool striker. Suarez played through the pain barrier to expertly curl home his 20th goal of the season from a free kick to wrap up a 2-0 win for The Reds against Hull.
We doubt it'll be long before Suarez shakes off his injury and adidas see their man back in the F50, along with the rest of their contracted strikers, but now he's tried the Nitrocharge, like Steven Gerrard, he may well have a decision to make.
