We unlock the SoccerBible Boot Vault for the first time in 2011, and begin the year with a classic adidas football boot that's been away for far too long in our opinion!
The adidas Profi football boots are rarely seen on the pitch nowadays, which is a great shame as they were one of adidas' most popular boot silo's. Back in the early 2000's the adidas Profi was the boot of choice for such players as Newcastle icon Nolberto Solano, and were instantly recognisable due to the 100% leather fold-over tongue and embroidered Trefoil logo.
The boots gained a cult following due to the unique style they brought to the football pitch, and of course because of the soft and comfortable K leather upper. The stand-out feature which made the Profi so popular was undoubtedly the adidas Trefoil, which also adorns the boot heel. It would have been no coincidence to see a player turn up on matchday with a pair of Profi's in his bag and a pair of adidas Gazelle trainers on his feet!
Looking back on the history of the adidas Profi football boots, it seems that in the mid-2000's the boots were fazed out in the UK with both the Copa Mundial and World Cup carrying the heritage mantle. However, what's interesting is that when all three boots were retailing the Copa's and World Cup's would cost around £80 GBP, yet the Profi was deemed by many to be the better boot and would set you back around £100 GBP.
As a performance boot, the adidas Profi could boast a kangaroo leather upper for instant comfort and customised fit, with crafted cross-over stitching around the toe area for greater comfort, feel on the ball and to prolong the boots shape. An extended heel counter provided added rear foot comfort and support, and a triple density TPU outsole combined minimum weight with maximum forefoot flexibility.
We love delving into our Boot Vault, and usually we're able to take a comparative look at a boot to judge it's modern day counterpart, but on this occasion there's no updated version and in our opinion that's because the adidas Profi football boots can still perform in the modern game!
Stay tuned to the SoccerBible as we reveal even more soccer cleats from the Boot Vault, showcasing the best retro, classic and once forgotten boots and bringing them back to life!
